I like the theory, but a big misstep here is that the story was written by Stephen King, not Stanley Kubrick. Is there any reason to believe King was writing an anti-Zionist allegory?

Glad you asked that. No, I don't think King was thinking about Israel when he wrote The Shining. But Kubrick read his own interpretation into the story and realized he could turn the film into an allegory using King's characters, setting and plot.

I thought the room number was changed to 237 for the movie because the Timberline Lodge in Oregon (the exterior shot hotel in the film opening) had a room 217 and they didn’t want people refusing to stay in it.

The date thing is made up. July 23 has no special meaning.

Ann, that was a WOW.

That movie sticks in one's head for life. But if this is truly the deeper meaning ( and I can't argue) then my thoughts which are not mainstream..are not ..well I'm not...well...I'm not the only one?

Another aspect of this theme covered by film analyst and critic Rob Ager is the sexual abuse of Danny by his father Jack. Freemasonry seems to have connections to child abuse as I have read elsewhere on substack. https://youtu.be/dW2GrG7Zk0U?si=1xuyByVh6j28anVh

You should watch also the new movie Blink Twice, there are similar aspects but very explicit by the end of movie. Fascinating also how the island’s villa is painted in red, too.

Fascinating stuff, thanks!

I watched Eyes Wide Shut when it came out. Like most Kubrick films it's slow and self conscious which made it hard to watch. I don't know that I have anything to add to the discussion around it.

There is an older interpretation along similar lines about it being an allegory for the new world order in which Jack is the essence of the US, controlled by old Europe. What sets it up so well are the occasional scenes that come and go disjointed from the story; the occasional ghost sightings etc.

interesting take on this movie for sure. Do Eyes Wide Shut next, always thought that was an oddly fascinating Kubrick film about the freemasons. Possibly even Kubrick warning us all from his deathbed of the depravity and satanic rituals Hollywood and the powerful in society are part of.
